Objectives
The primary goal of any world language course is develop your ability to SPEAK, READ, WRITE and UNDERSTAND that language. Having proficiency in another language will then open the door to authentic cultural engagement and interaction.
Every step, however small, you take on the path to proficiency widens your universe and deepens your enjoyment of the language.
In Mr. Mercer's Spanish II class our objectives are simple:
1) to develop your overall proficiency in the Spanish language
2) to deepen your connection with the people, places and histories of the Spanish speaking world.
How are we going to do this?
Research shows that the most effective and fastest way to become proficient in another language is to immerse yourself with COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT from that language. Just as a newborn baby is immersed in constant input of their native tongue, it is my job to create an environment of 100% Comprehensible Input. Your job as student is to focus during class so that the input is absorbed fully.
Examples of Comprehensible Input activities include:
TPR (Total Physical Response) - This method allows students to acquire new vocabulary by acting out the words.
Story "Asking"- This is when the teacher builds a story with the help of the entire class. The content is related to various structures of the day and the class can assess their acquisition by acting out the story, re-writing it, illustrating it, re-telling it or writing a similar story of their own.
Songs: We will learn songs in Spanish that inspire, entertain and deepen cultural understanding while students acquire the language and develop listening comprehension.
Reading: Students will read engaging, level appropriate, Spanish novels to review and reinforce a natural language acquisition.
How do you best learn?
A key responsibility of any learner is to understand how their own mind works.
